What is Radiation Oncology?
Radiation Oncology is the field of medicine focused on the treatment of cancer with high energy and precise beam radiation therapy. Radiation can be given either alone or in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy. It may be used to heal patients with curable cancers or relieve symptoms in patients with incurable cancers.
What is a Radiation Oncologist?
A radiation oncologist specializes in the treatment of cancer patients through the use of radiation therapy. A radiation oncologist oversees and directs the care of each patient, ensuring that every treatment is accurately given.
The radiation oncologist monitors patient progress and adjusts treatment to help ensure quality care. Radiation oncologists may also help identify and treat any side effects that might occur during or after radiation therapy. They work closely with other physicians as part of a multi-disciplinary cancer team to make sure that each patient is getting the best possible treatment.
