Heart Optimization Clinic
Heart failure is diagnosed when your heart cannot effectively pump blood to the rest of your body, causing the body’s need for oxygen to only be partially met. Heart failure does not mean that your heart has stopped or is not working at all.
Two Types of Heart Failure:
Systolic Heart Failure
This occurs when the left side of the heart muscle becomes weak and is unable to contract or “pump” with normal force. A normal amount of blood fills the ventricle, but the heart muscle is too thin and weak to pump it out completely.
Diastolic Heart Failure
This occurs when the heart muscle becomes thick and stiff. When the ventricles are resting between heartbeats, it does not fill with the normal amount of blood. This means less blood is pumped out with each heartbeat.
