Treatments and Procedures
Baptist Health Care provides care for all general urology conditions, using the following treatments:
Androgen deprivation
Also called hormone therapy, this therapy reduces the level of male hormones (androgens) and prevents them from reaching prostate cancer cells allowing the cancer to shrink or grow more slowly.
Brachytherapy “seeds”
Also called radioactive seed implantation therapy, this therapy places radioactive material next to or within a tumor. In the case of prostate cancer, radioactive seeds are placed into the affected gland.
Cryosurgery
Technique of using extreme cold to treat tumors.
da Vinci® Prostatectomy
This approach to prostatectomy provides access to the internal anatomy through five small incisions. This technology allows the surgeon to perform a very precise, nerve-sparing operation. External beam radiation
The most widely used type of radiation therapy. Radiation is focused on the cancer from a machine outside the body. It’s similar to getting an X-ray, but takes longer. This type of therapy can be used to treat large areas of the body and can treat more than one area. The radiation may be given daily over several weeks in an outpatient setting.

Laproscopic surgery
Minimally invasive surgery using one or more small incisions and using small tubes and tiny video cameras and surgical instruments.
Nephrectomy
Treatment of kidney disease, nephrectomy, or kidney removal, is performed on patients with severe kidney damage from disease, injury, or congenital conditions. These include cancer of the kidney (renal cell carcinoma); polycystic kidney disease (a disease in which cysts, or sac-like structures, displace healthy kidney tissue); and serious kidney infections. It is also used to remove a healthy kidney from a donor for the purposes of kidney transplantation.
Prostate biopsy
Treatment of prostate disease, prostate biopsy is a procedure in which small samples are removed from a man's prostate gland to be tested for the presence of cancer. It is typically performed when the scores from a PSA blood test rise to a level that is associated with the possible presence of prostate cancer.
Robotic assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy
Treatment of kidney disease. In partial nephrectomy, only the diseased or infected portion of the kidney is removed utilizing the da Vinci® S HD Surgical System. *Robotic surgeries are only performed at Baptist Hospital.
Robotic surgery
The da Vinci® S HD Surgical System offers patients benefits such as reduced pain, less blood loss, minimal scarring, faster recovery times and earlier return to normal activities.
Salvage prostatectomy
Prostatectomy after radiation therapy or cryosurgery.
Trans urethral resection bladder tumor
Treatment of bladder or prostate disease, transurethral resection of the bladder is a surgical procedure that is used both to diagnose bladder cancer and to remove cancerous tissue from the bladder.
