Meet Your Provider

What led you to become a nurse practitioner?
Almost all of my immediate and extended family work in the nursing or medical profession. I was always fascinated by what they did and by the age of 12 knew that I wanted to be a nurse.

What about your line of work do you find most rewarding and why?
When patients make decisions because they are empowered with knowledge. I hope that I can help them gain knowledge by answering their questions and teaching them about their options and resources.

What is something about you that only your patients would know?
I don’t have an agenda. I want patients and their loved ones to decide what is best for them. My job is to explain the medical issues and potential outcomes. I will advise them of the recommended treatment. But the decision on what to do is always their own.

How would a patient describe you?
Friendly, respectful, and a good listener.

What's your proudest moment as a provider?
When my daughter became an Army Nurse.

In your opinion, what's the most important factor in a provider-patient relationship?
Being truthful. The provider and patient need to trust each other and that starts with both of us telling the truth.

What can a patient expect when they have you as a provider?
Respect. Respect for them as an individual and respect for their ability to make decisions about their health.

What do you find most encouraging about the work you do?
Every day I help people lead healthier and longer lives through education and empowerment.

What are your top priorities with every patient you see?
Understanding who they are. What they want from the interaction. What are they concerned about? Why did they come to see me?

Describe one of the top ways you ensure each patient receives the quality, personal health care he/she deserves.
Always start with listening. Give the patient and family adequate time to tell me what brought them in and what they are worried about. Sometimes patients are worried because of a prior interaction with health care involving themselves or a loved one. I want them to tell me about this so I can be conscientious about not repeating this negative experience for them.

Is there anything more or extra you would like prospective patients to know about you?
My parents immigrated to the United States from Ireland. I am one of seven children. I served in the United States Air Force where I met my husband who retired from the United States Air Force.

Patient education and empowerment.
