Obstetrics is the medical specialty focused on the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the period during which they recover from childbirth. Obstetrics is usually practiced in conjunction with gynecology.

An obstetrician is a physician who has successful completed specialized education and training in the care and management of pregnancy, labor and the time directly following childbirth. Obstetricians work to help ensure that pregnancy results in the delivery of a healthy baby without impairing the health of the mother.
