Caring For Those With Cancer: Meet Veronica Lindsey
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to highlight the caring, compassionate team that cares for our patients in their most vulnerable times. Meet Veronica Lindsey, registration representative at Baptist Cancer Institute – Hematology - Oncology.
Veronica has been with Baptist for six years and is often the first person to greet patients who enter for appointments. She checks them in, verifies insurance information and communicates with other members of the care team to ensure patients have the care they need. Veronica also makes calls when rides may be needed, helps with prescription refills, processes records requests, enters patient data and more.
“As registration representatives, we are the face of our department; when our patients and their families enter our department, I greet them with a hello and smile,” Veronica said. “Then I ask, how may I help you? Usually, this involves me checking in with the patient and letting them know that I am here to help them through their journey. I try to be professional, knowledgeable and efficient with the patients I meet. I find that it does ease our patient experience when I bond with them and treat them like family. I cherish my moments with our patients and love being here because I feel we can make a difference.”
Veronica believes in the Baptist values of Ownership, Integrity, Compassion, Excellence and Service. They align with her personal values and way of life.
“At Baptist, we excel in showing kindness to those we meet,” Veronica said. “It’s the small things that matter to those we serve; our patients and families verbally express this to the front desk staff daily.”
Veronica's role requires showing kindness and compassion. She appreciates that Baptist helps those through health challenges and that care is delivered the same way for every patient, no matter their status or financial means.
Veronica and her husband, Malcolm, show kindness in their spare time too. They are ministers at their church. Veronica helps care for her father and loves spending time with him and other family, such as her sisters, nephews and nieces. Prior to joining the team at Baptist, Veronica worked in hospice care for 20 years. She has been married to Malcolm for 27 years.
Her favorite Bible verse is Psalms 121:1-2, NIV:
A song of ascents.
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
Veronica, thank you for being a helper of the Lord and a helper at Baptist, especially to those dealing with a cancer diagnosis and navigating their journey. Thank you for caring so compassionately to everyone you encounter.
