What is Oncology?
Oncology is the field of internal medicine that includes the study, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Within oncology, there are many subspecialties including: gynecological oncology, medical oncology, pediatric oncology, radiation oncology and surgical oncology. Treatment for cancer may include medication, radiation, chemotherapy, surgery or palliative care.
What is an Oncologist?
An oncologist is an internal medicine physician that has additional training specific to the treatment of cancer. Oncologists often specialize in cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy but some focus on certain types of cancers, blood diseases and specialized forms of treatment. As needed, oncologists work with surgeons and radiation oncologists to help patients with cancer achieve the best possible outcomes.
